New Orleans begins Removing Confederate Monuments

History was made in Louisiana this morning as the city began disassembling confederate monuments and statutes around the city. New Orleans mayor says that “after public discussion and legal challenges, it was decided that the landmarks do not reflect the values and diversity that give the city it’s strength.”

Protestors flocked to the scene to express their anger. Some of the officials taking down the statutes even received death threats according to NBC News.

The national debate on Confederate symbols sparked even more after the 9 parishioners were killed in a black church in South Carolina in 2015.

For now the structures are going to be put in storage.
