Donald Trump officially ended the controversial family separation policy at the border more than a year ago, but new documents filed in federal court Tuesday say that more than 900 children have been separated from their parents or guardians since June 2018. The information was supplied by the Department of Justice to the American Civil Liberties Union, which continues to challenge family separations in court.
The reasons given for the family separations include such minor infractions as having a ticket for driving without a license to a parent not changing a baby’s diaper in a timely fashion.
Lee Gelernt, with the ACLU’s Immigrants Right Project, said, “The administration is still doing family separation under the guise that they are protecting children from their own parents even though the criminal history they are citing is either wrong or shockingly minor. This is just circumventing the court’s order.” (The New York Times)
