Update on Gilroy Garlic Festival: Shooter Acted Alone

Authorities in California have acknowledged what most of us already realized — the shooter at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday likely acted alone.

When information was just starting to come in on Sunday, many reports suggested that Santino William Legan may have had an accomplice. Even after catching up with him and fatally shooting him, police continued investigating a second shooter, but came up empty.

Yesterday (Tuesday) Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said, “Our investigation is leading us more and more to believe that there was not a second person involved.”

The 19-year-old Legan killed three people, including two children, and wounded more than a dozen when he opened fire. (NBC News)

Hot Takes:

  • There’s almost never a second shooter. One of the reasons people like this get to this point is a feeling of isolation.
  • I wonder how much time and resources were wasted looking for an accomplice.
  • It’s so horrible that two children died. How do you shoot a six-year-old?
