Two big explosions have left one person dead and dozens injured.

In the early morning hours today (Thursday), a gas line exploded in Lincoln County, Kentucky, killing one person and injuring at least three more. It occurred in a mobile home park, and at least six homes were damaged. (NBC News)

Yesterday (Wednesday) morning, an explosion at an ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown, Texas sent at least 66 people for medical attention. Most of those hurt were treated for minor burns. The refinery produces propane and propylene, as well as materials used to make plastic and industrial products. (NBC News)

Hot Takes:

  • Both of these accidents are good arguments for alternative energy. Solar panels and wind turbines don’t explode.
  • Someday a gas main is going to explode in a densely populated area and kill a lot of people.
  • Everyone wants things like hot water, gas for their grills and clean packaging for their food, but nobody wants to know how the sausage is made. This is how the sausage is made.
  • Considering the size of the refinery explosion, hats off to ExxonMobil for its safety protocols. 66 injuries, and it sounds like none were really serious — and no deaths.
