Donald Trump: Speaks to NRA Head after this Weekend’s Shooting

In the wake of this weekend’s shootings in El Paso and Dayton, President Trump had a phone call with an important policy influencer — NRA head Wayne LaPierre.

The two spoke Tuesday, just two days after the massacres. According to Fox News, there’s no indication as to who initiated the call. The Washington Post reports that LaPierre told Trump his base would oppose new measures on background checks.

Yesterday, Trump reiterated during his visit to Dayton that he believes there is an “appetite” for background checks.

Hot Takes:

  • This is the same NRA that has funneled millions of dollars from Russia into the GOP coffers, right?
  • It sounds like maybe Trump told LaPierre that the NRA stance on background checks is a loser.
  • He did what he should: Get viewpoints from all sides of the debate.
  • Regardless, it’s just bad optics.
