IMMIGRATION: Trump Targets Immigrants Who Use GOV Programs

Immigrants who use food stamps or subsidized housing will find it tougher to obtain permanent legal status as the result of a new Trump administration policy designed to cut back on the number of poor immigrants in the U.S.

Those likely to be hit the hardest by this new policy are immigrants who are in the country legally and receiving government assistance, as those who are having financial difficulties may now have a harder time getting a green card to stay in the U.S. legally.

The new policy was announced Monday morning by Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. He said, “The benefit to taxpayers is a long-term benefit of seeking to ensure that our immigration system is bringing people to join us as American citizens, as legal permanent residents first, who can stand on their own feet, who will not be reliant on the welfare system, especially in the age of the modern welfare state which is so expansive and expensive.” (The New York Times)

Hot Takes:

  • Isn’t part of the American dream giving people the chance to better themselves?
  • Everyone needs a little help some time.
  • This makes sense. If you can’t take care of yourself, you can’t help make America great again.
