SEVERE WEATHER: Southeast Texas Overwhelm by Imelda

Remnants of Tropical Storm Imelda inundated parts of southeast Texas overnight with as much as 10 inches of rain, causing flash floods and leaving roads impassable.

The National Weather Service has also confirmed multiple tornadoes touching down overnight. In Winnie, Texas, about an hour east of Houston, severe flooding caused the evacuation of a hospital. The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office says its 911 call center was overwhelmed overnight with more than 1,000 water rescue calls.

Several more inches of rain are expected today as the storm continues to move through the area. (KTRK-TV)

Hot Takes:

  • Many of these areas were flooded by Harvey two years ago. Even some homes that were destroyed by Harvey and rebuilt are getting flooded again.
  • Some areas received up to six inches of rain per hour.
  • By the time the storm moves on, some areas could receive as much as 34 inches of rain.
