DONALD TRUMP: Loses Battle Over Taxes

Someone may be about to get a look at President Trump‘s taxes.

A federal judge in New York has ruled against his assertion that he, his family and all his businesses are immune from any criminal inquiries just because he’s President. The Manhattan district attorney’s office has subpoenaed Trump’s tax returns as part of its investigation into the alleged payoffs of Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

Judge Victor Marrero has tossed a lawsuit Trump brought against D.A. Cyrus Vance‘s office, ruling, “This Court cannot endorse such a categorical and limitless assertion of presidential immunity.”

Trump’s attorneys have filed for an emergency order of appeal. (NBC News)

Hot Takes:

  • Sounds like this one will probably go to the Supreme Court.
  • Sure, Trump is immune from actual prosecution while he’s in the White House. But that doesn’t preclude investigations from happening, and it doesn’t give blanket coverage to everyone and everything in his orbit.
  • This is a fishing expedition. They don’t need his taxes to make this case. They’re just trying to find other stuff to nail him with.
