LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – President Joe Biden is in Louisiana today, Thursday, May 6, promoting his $2 trillion infrastructure package.
Biden is stopping first in Lake Charles, then heading to New Orleans as part of his Getting America Back on Track Tour.
Biden arrived around 12:15 p.m. at Chennault International Airport, where he was greeted by Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards.
Edwards said the president is expected to stop at the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles and tour sewer and water systems in New Orleans.
“I’ll be joining the President in Lake Charles tomorrow at the bridge, and again, this is fitting,” Edwards said. “Infrastructure in Louisiana, roads, and bridges, have been given a D-plus grade. Louisiana has 1,634 bridges in poor condition.”
“The American Jobs Plan proposes $115 billion above the existing surface transportation programs to modernize the bridges, highways, roads, and main streets that are in most need of repair,” according to information from the White House. “With respect to Louisiana specifically, of the 12,853 bridges in the state, 1,634, or 12.7%, are classified as structurally deficient. The state has identified needed repairs on 3,251 bridges at an estimated cost of $6.9 billion.”
The president left Joint Base Andrews around 9:30 a.m. and is expected to arrive in Lake Charles around 12:15 p.m. Around 1:25 p.m., he will speak on the American Jobs Plan near the I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River.
He will then travel to New Orleans, where he will tour the Carrollton Water Plant.
