Hold This L: Dr. Dre Sends Bizarre Tweet After 2 Year Hiatus, Twitter Tries To Figure Out What It Means
Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz
Dr. Dre’s once-dormant official Twitter account says that “Dr. Dre doesn’t Tweet” but apparently he hands out Ls.
The good Doc lit up the Internet with his first tweet in two years when his account commented underneath a post by a Twitter user named @bowyoade about British singer-songwriter VV Brown‘s feature in the Metro UK. He replied with a lonely “L”. But why?
— Dr. Dre (@drdre) August 16, 2021
The Internet started sleuthing. What is the significance of the L? Does it mean she lost? Is the L the Roman numeral 50? Is she an ex? Maybe he forgot to log out of his burner account like Kevin Durant famously once did?
Dr. Dre’s previous tweet was from 2019 when he posted a photo of him and Kanye West with a caption teasing that Kanye’s “Jesus Is King Part II Coming Soon’. Like Dre’s ‘Detox‘ before it, that album never materialized but maybe that work will end up on Kanye’s forthcoming Donda release.
Ye and Dre Jesus is King Part II Coming Soon pic.twitter.com/Isr0TrijB8
— Dr. Dre (@drdre) November 18, 2019
VV Brown is an indie-pop artist who lives 5400 miles across the ocean and Dr. Dre is a billionaire music producer from the West Coast who loves cranking out legendary funky gangsta sh*t. @bowyoade seems to be an average British bloke with his 332 followers. There’s no visible connection.
So why the random L? Maybe it’s just an old-fashioned case of butt-dialing from the elusive Compton OG or his team. Perhaps Dre’s phone was privy to some exciting back pocket bounce action during a legendary studio session. Who knows?
Nonetheless, the VV Brown was excited enough for the mention and even thanked Dr. Dre’s Twitter page for the L in a now-deleted reply. She’s a big fan. The acknowledgment was enough. It is Dr. Dre after all.
Check out more reactions below.

A unique collaboration between an HBCU, Grammy Award-winning rapper Lecrae and a foundation dedicated to helping those in correctional facilities is now the basis for a contest to give an incarcerated individual a shot at releasing their own Hip-Hop track.
The “Original Hip-Hop Track Contest” was announced in a press release this past Monday (August 16th). Contestants in the competition will write original lyrics and come up with a song title to one of three beats specifically crafted for the contest by renowned producer Zaytoven. The entries will be reviewed and judged by a committee of students at the Department of Music at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. After the group selects 25 finalists, Lecrae will then choose the winner from that list and that song will be recorded, mastered and publicly released. Rules for the tracks dictate that the lyrics and content be positive, have no curse words or gang affiliation references and have a length of two minutes maximum. The winning track will also be streamed on Spotify, and proceeds will go to a charity providing rehabilitative support for prisoners in that state.
“There are very few opportunities that give those locked up a sense of hope, and even fewer that encourage and recognize the level of musical talent that sits in our prison system – this contest does both, which is why I’m proud to be involved,” said Lecrae in the press release. Aventiv Technologies President and CEO Dave Abel spoke highly of the contest: “Music has a powerful impact on our mindsets and daily lives. One of the goals of this campaign is to ignite creativity and passion among participants, and we hope it’s a life changing experience for the winner.”
The Original Hip-Hop Track contest is open until September 15th. More information can be found here.Continue Reading

While more and more celebrities are revealing that they at some point battled COVID in the past year (see Jim Jones and DJ Khaled most recently), Drake shocked fans that not only did he survive the Coronavirus, but it also caused him some hairline problems.
Responding to someone commenting on how his signature heart design in his wig piece was looking “stressed,” the 6 God acknowledged the look and took everyone by surprised when he said it was a result of him having had been infected with the Rona.
“I had Covid that shit grew in weird I had to start again it’s coming back don’t diss.”
WOW. We can’t say we saw that one coming. The news comes on the heels of both Jim Jones and DJ Khaled also having revealed that they had been battling the deadly virus, but luckily were able to come out of it with everything on the up and up… for now (long Covid IS a thing).
Still, the whole hairline thing is a new side-effect that we never heard of. The comment came after a pic of Drake in the studio began circulating and showed his heart hairline struggling to make a full comeback.
Well, we guess there’s another reason to fear getting the Coronavirus now. Struggle hairlines! Protect LeBron James at all costs!Continue Reading

These days, mental health has gotten more attention in Hip-Hop culture and society overall leading to more rappers being forthright about their struggles. A recent revelation by Lil Wayne about his own journey and suicide attempt at the age of 12 has caught many by surprise and added to the conversation.
As a guest on the web series Uncomfortable Conversations with Emmanuel Acho, the five-time Grammy Award winner got candid about his battles with mental health and bravely spoke about the pressures he was under at the time, saying he felt he couldn’t talk to his friends or even confide in his strict mom about what he was going through.
After trying to hide his activities afterschool and being found out by a relative, his mother put her foot down stating he wouldn’t be allowed to rap anymore. “When I was told that I couldn’t have what I wanted, what I dream of, what I desired, and that was to rap. I was willing to die for it,” Lil Wayne stated. He found his mom’s gun, called the police to state what he was going to do and pulled the trigger, shooting himself in the chest. Thankfully, police arrived swiftly and rushed him to the hospital, saving his life.
Although Lil Wayne admits that he still deals with his mental health from time to time, he’s thankful for the vast amount of support he’s received along the way. He also expressed that people should really listen with empathy to those on that same journey. “What I wish people knew about mental health is that it’s real…If you are a parent of a kid with a mental health problem or something, even if you think, react with the realest reaction,” he said.

Top-ranked tennis star Naomi Osaka held her first press conference since withdrawing from the French Open three months ago citing her mental health struggles connected to speaking with the media.
During a media conference on Zoom at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday Osaka didn’t fare well as she became tearfully upset when a journalist from the Cincinnati Enquirer asked her a question about her recent dealings with reporters.
“You’re not crazy about dealing with us, especially in this format, yet you have a lot of outside interests that are served by having a media platform. I guess my question is, how do you balance the two?” Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Paul Daughtery asked.
“When you say I’m not crazy about dealing with you guys, what does that refer to?” Osaka replied asking for clarification.
Daugherty elaborated on his question saying, “Well, you’ve said you don’t especially like the press conference format, yet that seems to be obviously the most widely used means of communication to the media and through the media to the public.”
“That’s interesting. I would say the occasion, like when to do the press conferences what I feel is the most difficult,” Osaka responded before taking a long pause to further think about the question. The moderator tried to quell the awkward pause by suggesting that Osaka take the next question to which she refused.
“No. I’m very actually interested in that point of view,” Osaka said. ” So if you could repeat that, that would be awesome.”

— The Shadow League (@ShadowLeague) August 16, 2021
Daugherty again rephrased his question saying that Osaka was not fond of press conferences but suggested that her outside interests are largely propped up by her celebrity generated from her tennis career, he asked how is she able to balance the two.
Osaka responded saying: “I feel like this is something that I can’t really speak for everybody. I can only speak for myself, but ever since I was younger I’ve had a lot of media interest on me, and I think it’s because of my background as well as how I play. Because in the first place I’m a tennis player. That’s why a lot of people are interested in me.”
“I would say in that regard I’m quite different to a lot of people,” she continued. “I can’t really help that there are some things that I tweet or some things that I say that kind of create a lot of news articles or things like that. I know it’s because I’ve won a couple of grand slams and I’ve gotten to do a lot of press conferences where these things happen.”
“But I would also say I’m not really sure how to balance the two,” she concluded. “I’m figuring it out at the same time as you are I would say.”
Everything seemed fine after her answer but while moving on to the next question from another journalist Osaka began to visibly tear up in the middle of the question that was asking her about her preparation for the tournament. She tried to contain the tears by looking up but then when she couldn’t she looked down and hid her face beneath her hat wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
The moderator stopped the press conference to allow Osaka an opportunity to step away and compose herself. She would return five minutes later before apologizing and completing the press conference.
“Sorry for walking out,” she said.
The 23-year-old is finally participated in a press conference after swearing off future media appearances despite threats of punishment from all of the sports major tournaments including the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the US Open, and the previously mentioned French Open. Osaka, whose father is Haitian, has announced that she is donating her prize winnings from this event to help support relief efforts for Haiti. The island country just suffered a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake that reportedly killed almost two thousand people.
Following the emotional exchange with the journalist Osaka’s agent, Stuart Duguid, issued a statement in which he called the reporter a “bully”.
“The bully at the Cincinnati Enquirer is the epitome of why player / media relations are so fraught right now,” Drguid said in his statement. “Everyone on that Zoom will agree that his tone was all wrong and his sole purpose was to intimidate. Really appalling behavior. And this insinuation that Naomi owes her off court success to the media is a myth — don’t be so self-indulgent.”
Daugherty later published a column titled, “Naomi Osaka is honest, thoughtful and could help many other athletes” in which he praised her reply as “honest, thoughtful…and unlike any answer I’ve ever gotten in 34 years covering sports in Cincinnati.” He wrote that his question’s nuisance may have been lost during that press conference because of how it was conducted and that “maybe she didn’t understand the question or maybe it made her uncomfortable.”
Osaka’s battle with depression and mental health has been widely reported since her withdrawal from the French Open including her “long bouts of depression” since winning her first major title. It also led to her pulling out of two other recent tennis tournaments including Wimbleton. The extraordinary pressure and expectations that the Japanese tennis great has experienced since 2018 have been tremendous including representing her country Japan at this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo where she was given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the game’s opening ceremony. While she was surprisingly upset and eliminated early from the games she became a lightning rod for other athletes dealing with mental health issues including highly decorated Olympian Simone Biles, who withdrew from a majority of Olympic competition over her own mental health battle.
“[Withdrawing from competition] was something I needed to do for myself,” Osaka said later in the press conference. “I was a little bit embarrassed to go out because I didn’t know if people were looking at me in a different way. The biggest eye-opener was going to the Olympics and having other athletes come up to me and say that they were really glad that I did what I did. I’m proud of what I did.”Continue Reading

Following the lead of the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Bronner Bros. International Beauty Show has been postponed. Given the rise of the delta variant in New Orleans, show organizers believed it was more important to health and safety than moving forward with the 75th Anniversary show.
“With the Delta Variant wreaking havoc on our population, we do not feel that It Is safe to host the 18,000-20,000 visitors our show was on track to bring to New Orleans,” read the statement In part.
A statement on the Bronner Bros. website reiterated the commitment to the health and safety of participants, exhibitors, attendees, and industry partners.
While we have taken all precautions to host a safe and amazing show, we cannot control this virus. The New Orleans’ mandate that ALL visitors to the convention center, hotels, restaurants and bars are required to either show proof of being fully vaccinated or proof of a negative COVID test, still does not relieve us of our responsibility to play a role in keeping you as safe as possible. Since we cannot guarantee that everyone entering the venue will be fully vaccinated or free of the virus, or will want to take a COVID test, the best way we can keep you safe is to wait until the pandemic has ended or at least subsided to a better, new normal.
A new date had not been given. According to the website, refunds would be processed automatically for those who purchased tickets through the website.
Beginning this week, New Orleans requires proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test for anyone 12 or older who is participating “in activities with a higher risk of COVID transmission.” This includes those attending large indoor events, eating at an indoor restaurant or bar, attending an indoor gym or fitness, and large outdoor events.
I was so excited about going to a Bronner Bros show but then COVID came along
— Kera • Licensed Haircare Pro (@CuseCurlfriend) August 11, 2021
Eater reported that some restaurants put a temporary pause on indoor dining while developing a plan to meet the new requirement. Checking vaccination status adds a new layer that some small businesses might not have been ready to handle.
Based in Atlanta, the Bonner Bros. has been a mainstay in Black haircare for generations. And while the hair show is on pause, large events are moving forward in Atlanta, like a revived FreakNik and the Shaky Knees Music Festival.
Unlike New Orleans, Atlanta does not have similar guidance around large events as the pandemic continues to surge. The news hit Tuesday that Georgia crossed over 1 million COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

COVID is real. I was running around here thinking I was Superman and COVID knocked the socks off Superman. So I urge and encourage everybody to please continue to mask up, please continue with hand sanitizer, social distance as much as you can, try to stay away from as many packed and crowded places. So you took L’s on every single raffle you entered for those Travis Scott Air Jordan 1 “Fragments,” what can you do now? Well, you can try to convince Travis Scott himself to sell you his pair right off his feet.
But that will probably be an L, too.
At a recent basketball tournament at West Orange High School in West Orange, New Jersey that was hosted by Kyrie “Flat Earther” Irving, a fan spotted Travis Scott in attendance and decided to shoot his shot. No, he didn’t try to flirt with him so much as he flirted with the idea that he’d get Travis to take his money in exchange for the coveted Cactus Jack “Fragment’ Jordan 1’s that La Flame was sporting at the time.
Basically begging Travis to take the few crispy blue hunnid’s he had in his hand and bless him with the black and white 1’s, Travis seemed rather flattered that the fan would go to such lengths to secure a pair even if they weren’t his size. Gracefully putting his hands together and thanking the fan for his support, Travis declined the offer and went about his day because, well, he doesn’t need the money like that. While on the surface it seemed like a ridiculous move on the part of the fan, Travis is known to give fans the sneakers right off his feet at his shows, so on the low this dude kinda had the right idea.
Still, he (like the millions of other sneakerheads who wanted those particular sneakers) took an personal “L” from Travis Scott himself. Also it seemed like the fan only had a few hundred in his hand and everyone knows these joints are reselling for more than $3,000, so in actuality he was actually kinda lowballing Trav. Just sayin.’
Check out the video of the encounter below and let us know if you took an “L” or “W” on these joints when they dropped a few weeks ago.

Jay-Z continues to diversify his business portfolio. It has been revealed that he and Fanatics have their sights on the sports gambling category.
As spotted on Forbes Magazine some of the reasoning why the Rap legend had recently invested into the sports memorabilia brand is starting to unfold. Apparently Fanatics intends the expand their services and will hope to offer betting in the near future. According to paperwork filed with the New York State Gaming Commission, Hov has submitted documentation applying for his license. The application lists him as Vice President of Fanatics Betting & Gaming with his long time friend and partner Michael Rubin as Chief Executive.
“We’ve realized we have this incredible opportunity…to really transition (from) a leading e-commerce company to building the leading digital sports platform,” Rubin said of their recent moves. “That means, as a sports fan, you go to Fanatics and get any sports product that’s important to you.”
Carter is the only African American partner listed on the state license applications. While the move seems to be a lucrative risk this is not the first time the “Moment Of Clarity” rapper has ventured into the bookmaking arena. Jay-Z apparently held gaming licenses in Nevada and New Jersey when he operated his 40/40 Clubs in both states several years ago. He has since closed both locations.
Last week The Wall Street Journal reported that Fanatics was evaluated at roughly $18 billion dollars after the recent funding. You can watch Michael Rubin discuss the expanded vision for Fanatics in an interview with CNBC below.

Silento isn’t going to be dancing across a stage anytime soon. The former teen rap sensation has been indicted for murder in Georgia.
TMZ reports that a Georgia gang jury indicted Silento, born Ricky Lamar Hawk, for the murder of his cousin.
Back in February, the “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of his own kin, 34-year-old Frederick Rooks. Silento’s cousin was actually shot to death on January 21, and the DeKalb police department linked the rapper to the slaying.
The grand jury hit Silento with four felony charges that include a count of malice murder and a count of felony murder as well as aggravated assault and gun possession during the commission of a felony. Silento has been held without bond since his arrest.
The rapper’s team claims he has been suffering from mental issues. In September 2020, it was reported that he was arrested after breaking into the wrong home with a hatchet while allegedly looking for his girlfriend. Then in October 2020 he was arrested after getting caught speeding, going 143 MPH on the I-85 in Atlanta. Shortly after the speeding incident, Silento claimied he was racially profiled by the police and that said harassment was partly due to his friendship with Donald Trump, which seems to be complete fiction.
Unfortunately, it looks like Silento never got the help for his mental issues before it cost someone their life.

It’s an unfortunate fact that the web is a haven for the most vile and vicious streams of negativity, and that the targets are often celebrities. A prime example of that occurred over the weekend after Lizzo dropped her latest single, “Rumors”. But her friend and collaborator on the track, Cardi B was having none of it.
After a fan of hers shared a clip from the now-deleted Instagram Live video where Lizzo tearfully spoke about how the negativity was impacting her, Cardi B had words for the haters via her Twitter account: “When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive,” she wrote. “When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”

— iamcardib (@iamcardib) August 15, 2021
The rapper also took time out later to address the detractors through Twitter that were attacking “Rumors” in the wake of its release by pointing out how wildly successful it is on the charts. “Rumors is doing great. Stop trying to say the song is flopping to dismiss a woman emotions on bullying or acting like they need sympathy,” she wrote.

Despite the emotional video, Lizzo is still determined and unbowed in the face of all those hateful messages. The singer has been very vocal about being body-positive, from posting an unedited nude selfie to becoming a spokesperson for Dove and their Self-Esteem Project. “For the most part, it doesn’t hurt my feelings. I don’t care,” she said in the video on Sunday (August 15th). “I just think when I’m working this hard, my tolerance gets lower, my patience is lower, I’m more sensitive and it gets to me.”
